Comparison between Local Map vs. Web Map

Local Map: Uses data provided by the district to add new streets, correct errors in existing streets, tweak locator parameters (match score, offset, spelling sensitivily, etc...)

  • Ability to geocode to street centerlines, parcels, or a combination of both using a composite locator
  • No driving directions available (routing)
  • Custom symbology/labeling of the street data
  • Recommended for districts:
    • Who are seeing lots of new development
    • Who want more control over how the address locating process works
    • Who already have a copy of GIS street data
    • Who are comfortable using GIS tools to keep their street data updated (unless contracted with DDP to maintain street data)
Web Map: Professionally maintained and updated streets, provided free of charge by ESRI

  • Attractive looking street basemap, however provides no control over labeling
  • Ability to get driving directions to and from school
  • New developments might not be available right away
  • Updates available automatically about twice per year
  • Recommended for districts:
    • Who cannot obtain any GIS street data for their area
    • Who want to save time and money
    • Who are mostly built out and do not see many new developments
